Recycled Silver

Recycled silver!

Did you know that the jewellery made here at Clare Hawley Jewellery is in most cases 90% or above recycle silver!

I remember many years ago eagerly tuning into a new TV programme about gold mining in Alaska looking to improve my knowledge about the industry I’m in. As fascinating as the programme was, I was truly horrified at the destruction of pristine Alaskan outback in the pursuit of precious metals.

Around the same time my bullion dealer introduced ‘Eco Silver’ a full range of recycled silver along with fair trade gold which was welcome news to see a movement towards ethical metals within the business. The recycled silver comes from the scrap silver businesses like mine produce, we send it back to the dealer and they refine it and if you sell your old, unwanted or broken silver as scrap, that too goes to produce new sheet silver. Eco silver has always had a higher cost but I believe it is worth the extra pounds for a more sustainable material and a chance to reduce the impact of our consumption on our environment.

If you have bought silver jewellery from me in the past, you jewellery is likely to be around 90% recycled. Why only 90% and not go the full hog? All of my sheet metal, wire and silver rod is 100% recycled so if you buy a ring or bangle from me then it will be 100% recycled. Currently the ear hooks and silver chains are not recycled but you can bet I’m working on getting those products recycled too. Change within an industry is always consumer lead so the more you ask ‘is it recycled?’ the more the industry will move to supply us with what we want.
